Wolverhampton - How does a pumpkin grow?

Wolverhampton - How does a pumpkin grow?

We were so very lucky that Youth, one of our children’s nanny’s, came in to talk about ‘Pumpkins’ and about how she grows them on her allotment.

PSED: Self-confidence and self-awareness 30-50 months
• Is more outgoing towards unfamiliar people and more confident in new social situations.
40-60+ months
• Confident to speak to others about own needs, wants, interests and opinions.

Firstly she explained about how to plant a pumpkin seed and what it needs to grow. Then how long it took to grow and how long to keep it in the pot, before she had to plant it in the ground.
She brought us lots of beautiful photos of how the pumpkin grows and changes throughout the time it takes to grow.

UW: The World – 30-50 months
• Comments and asks questions about aspects of their familiar world such as the place where they live or the natural world.
• Can talk about some of the things they have observed such as plants, animals, natural and found objects.
• Developing an understanding of growth, decay and changes over time.
40-60+ months
• Looks closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change

She then opened up a pumpkin so we could see what was inside. We held and felt the seeds then explored the inside to feel the texture.

EAD: Exploring Media & Materials – 30-50 months
• Beginning to be interested in and describe the texture of things.

Some of us said it was “wet, cold and sticky.”

This was such an amazing experience for the children to learn first-hand about how the pumpkins that are all around us at this time of year start off and the process that they go through to grow.

Thank you so much Youth for sharing your passion with us in Preschool and teaching us so much. We have all been inspired to try planting some vegetables of our own at home!
