Wolverhampton - January 2019 newsletter

Welcome
We hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year. The children have been very excited to talk about their Christmas experiences with us and their friends. It has been delightful to hear about all their magical experiences and of course what Santa brought for them! We are now looking forward to a successful year ahead and wish you all a very happy and healthy 2019.
There was certainly a buzz in the nursery with the lead up to festive break. The children had a visit from Santa, a Christmas Party and a visit from “Farm on Wheels” to get us into the Christmas spirit.
We certainly have plenty to look forward to at nursery, with lots of fun events in the coming months. Watch this space for updates!
We would like to warmly welcome all the new families that are joining us in January. We are delighted to welcome you all to Shooting Stars.

Staff awards
In December Shooting Stars Nurseries held a staff event and awards ceremony to recognise, reward and celebrate the contribution that our team make to the children in our care and to Shooting Stars Nurseries as an organisation. We are pleased to tell you that Lyndsey won our ‘Parents’ Choice’ award, Nicky and Sian were jointly awarded ‘Wolverhampton Employee of the Year’ and Alannah was nominated for the ‘Rising Star’ award.
We are very proud of our winners and nominees. Many thanks to all parents who submitted comments for the Parents’ Choice award.

Home Link Activity
Each room each month has a “Home Link” activity to support and continue the children’s learning at home with activities and experiences they may have had or done at nursery. As the children have all had a busy festive period, this month all the rooms would like each family/child to create a “Family Book” that they can keep at nursery. In this book we would like the children to add photographs of special people in their lives from Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, Friends and Pets.

For the younger children this will help to support their sense of belonging, self-confidence and self-awareness and for the older children this will continue to support their communication and language skills as they look through these books and share them with staff and their peers. If you need any help or guidance with this “Home Link” task, then please do speak with your child’s key person. We have had already received a Family Book in Baby Room and the children are really enjoying these.

Spring Term Dates
The spring term runs from Monday 7th January – Friday 12th April. Half term week is Monday 18th February – Friday 22nd February.

Fundraising
Thank you to every that took part in fundraising last month. We raised £64.55 for Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day and £26.26 on our Elf Day for the Alzheimer’s Society.

EY Log
The launch of the EY Log has been a great success.
Each practitioner has been able to complete individual observations on the tablets, which has meant that observations can be made in the moment. It has also been really wonderful to capture videos to demonstrate learning too.

If you would like to see a tablet, or view your child’s learning journey, please speak with your child’s keyperson and this can be arranged.
We are hoping that the EY Log will become live to all parents during February and we will keep you informed of when this will commence.

Car park
With increasing numbers of families using the nursery car park, could we please ask that families park safely and consider our little pedestrians when using the car park. We have had a number of parents raise concerns about the use of the car park at front desk, in particularly during the 1pm drop off and collection times.
Please use an appropriate bay and avoid the yellow zig zag lines which are directly outside the nursery front door. This area must be left clear for emergencies as this our fire evacuation route out of the nursery. We have a number families who require the use of our disabled bay, so please could you avoid using this bay unless you have the need for it.

Room updates
Last month, Baby room enjoyed exploring colour through paint and created some lovely winter wonderland pictures. The children also explored their Christmas themed Treasure Basket, exploring the senses of sight, touch and smell. We have also supported our younger babies with tummy time and encouraged these children to develop their stretching skills and upper body movements.

Pre Toddlers enjoyed their Playdough station this month. They experimented by adding different textures, twigs and other natural materials to create a Christmas/Winter themed playdough station. Pre Toddlers also held a Christmas Stay and Play session for their families. Great fun was had by all and it helped to support and strengthen Parent Partnerships between families and their child’s Key Person.

Some of the children from our Toddler room visited Engellbery Residential Care Home last month. This was a lovely experience for our children and the residents of the care home alike. The children enjoyed playing games with the residents and enjoyed some arts and craft activities. We are hoping to continue with this into the New Year and form a positive mutual partnership, where the children are able to learn about and explore the world around them and their community. Over the festive period Toddler Room also held a magical Carol Concert for their families and enjoyed a Christmas themed Stay and Play session.

Pre School had a very busy month in December. The children were all stars in our Christmas Nativity. Thank you for all your support with the costumes - they were amazing. Thank you to everyone who attended our Stay and Play session, it was lovely to see so many families there. For January the children’s interest has lead them to “All About Me”. We will be looking at what makes us similar and different from others, how we feel and what makes us like this. We will also be looking at our five senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste.
